Meet Carlos!
Carlos Toledo, originally from Brazil, chose to pursue higher education in the United States. A 2023 graduate of the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Communication, Toledo has since taken on roles as the Marketing Manager for the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum and Member Manager for the Utah LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, showcasing his leadership and expertise in the field.
Q: Why did you choose to study at the University of Utah?
A: While I love Brazil, the high cost of living made it difficult to balance work and college. I began exploring options that offered me strong scholarship support. My dad attended BYU, which led me to consider schools in Utah. I initially attended LDS Business College, now known as Ensign College but later decided to transfer to the University of Utah. I was looking for a community where I could truly be myself, grow, and embrace my identity, and the U provided exactly that!
Q: Why did you choose to study Communication?
A: Ever since high school, I’ve been interested in advertising and public relations, with a natural ability to connect with people. My goal has always been to contribute to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, a vision that continues to inspire me. After discussing my aspirations and accomplishments with my advisors, I was guided toward a degree in Communication. This path provided me with the skills and knowledge to build a career in marketing while aligning with my broader ambitions of making a meaningful impact.
Q: What advice would you give to current humanities students?
A: Be your advisor’s best friend! Humanities is a beautiful program, but it can be easy to get lost in the translation. Keep your feet on the ground and focus on the ultimate goal: graduation. Your advisor will help guide you toward your academic goals, so prioritize meeting with them often.
Q: What advice would you give to graduating students?
A: Remind yourself who you are and what you’ve done. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to land an amazing job immediately after graduating. The world is in a challenging place right now, so there’s no need to stress about finding the perfect job right away – the right opportunity will come in time. Understand that earning six figures right out of college is unlikely, so focus on finding a role that offers growth and learning opportunities.
Q: What is the best professional advice you’ve received?
A: Apologize later – just do it! Don’t be afraid to take shots.
Q: What is your favorite part of your current role?
A: As the Marketing Manager for the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum, I oversee all aspects of marketing including social media, public relations, communications, and advertising. This role allows me to apply the skills I’ve developed through my education and experience while driving impactful strategies. I take pride in contributing to the organization’s success which aligns with my passion for marketing.
Q: How do you currently make an impact through your work or other activities?
A: My role as Member Manager for the LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce is incredibly rewarding, as it allows me to focus on supporting and empowering both individuals and businesses in the community. I’ve always been passionate about making a positive impact, identifying areas in our community where support is needed, and fostering strength and resilience in those around me. Helping others thrive and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive community is truly fulfilling work.
